Hearing the words “root canal” can cause anxiety for many patients—but the reality is far less scary than the procedure’s reputation suggests. In fact, modern root canal treatment is a routine, highly effective procedure that can save your natural tooth and relieve intense dental pain. If your Long Beach endodontist has recommended a root canal, knowing what to expect can ease your nerves and help you prepare for a smooth recovery.
Here’s a step-by-step guide to walk you through the root canal process.
Step 1: Diagnosis and Preparation
The process begins with a thorough examination. Your endodontist will review your symptoms, examine the affected tooth, and take X-rays or a 3 dimensional CT scan to assess the extent of damage or infection. Once it’s determined that a root canal is needed, your treatment will be scheduled. On the day of the procedure, the area around your tooth will be numbed using local anesthesia to ensure you feel no pain during treatment.
Step 2: Accessing the Pulp
Once the tooth is numb, the endodontist will place a small dental dam around it to keep it clean and dry. A small opening is then made in the crown of the tooth to access the infected or inflamed pulp tissue inside. This step is precise and painless thanks to local anesthesia.
Step 3: Cleaning and Shaping the Canals
Using specialized instruments, your endodontist will remove the damaged pulp, clean out the root canals, and shape them to prepare for filling. This stage eliminates bacteria and any remaining tissue that could lead to further infection. An antibacterial solution will also be used to thoroughly disinfect the canals.
Step 4: Filling the Canals
After the canals are cleaned and shaped, they are filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha, which seals the space and prevents bacteria from re-entering. A temporary or permanent filling is then placed to close the access hole created at the start of the procedure.
Step 5: Restoration and Aftercare
In most cases, you’ll need to return to your general dentist to have a crown placed over the treated tooth. This helps restore its strength and function. After your root canal, it’s normal to feel some tenderness for a few days, but over-the-counter pain relievers are usually enough to manage discomfort. Most patients return to normal activities the same day.
